Remaining Awake Through A Great Revolution

Oeuvre I : Veillée pour deux thérapies
Oeuvre II : Unresolved case No. 006

Brought together within a single theatrical continuum, the two works follow one another without interruption and together form a single duration of vigil, while retaining their autonomy. There are nights when no one sleeps because a dead person is still present, because their departure has notentirely taken place, because a community remains beside them so that their passage is not abandoned to the work of disappearance alone. In Haitian funeral vigils, remaining awake is a form of accompaniment: a wayof continuing to offer the deceased the warmth of voices, stories, songs, bodies and shared time.

Drawing its title from a sermon delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. at Washington National Cathedral on March 31, 1968, Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution brings together two autonomous works from the Mackenzy Bergile Studio fonds and places them in a state of reciprocal vigil. One begins beside the livingbody of a father who has returned from the threshold of disappearance; the other remains beside presences whose deaths and legal classification have not brought their histories to a close. Between them circulates thesame question: what does remaining beside that which has received no ending demand of the living?
