About
Mackenzy Bergile is a Franco-Haitian choreographer, designer, pianist-composer, poet, and dramaturg.
He has developed a body of work of rare formal breadth, in which dance, music, writing, clothing, objects, and scenic devices are shaped by the same commitment to precision, beauty, and thought.
Trained in fashion and garment-making between 2011 and 2014, he founded Mackenzy Bergile Studio in 2016, a studio dedicated to creation and conservation from which he conceives and develops his entire body of work. From 2016 to 2018, as an associate artist and visiting lecturer at the Lorient Campus of the European Academy of Art in Brittany, he gradually asserted a strikingly intense visual language of the body, in which gesture simultaneously becomes archive, ordeal, musical material, and a force for repair.
His landmark work Autothérapie (2025), followed by Identity Is a Rumor, Until Death Writes It Down (2027) extends this research through scenic architectures devoted to colonial legacies, familial transmission, interrupted personal narratives, and the forms left behind by the departed. Photographs, garments, instruments, texts, images, and scenic structures take on an almost sovereign presence within them.
As an artist-in-residence with the European PIPD — Ailleurs & Ici network from 2025 to 2030, and an associate artist at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Rennes et de Bretagne from 2026 to 2028, Mackenzy Bergile is currently situating his practice within a long-term period of research devoted to familial repair, intergenerational healing, and the articulation of the intimate and the political—an enquiry in which individua experiences are continually traversed by collective, historical, and diasporic memories. His work has been widely acclaimed for its choreographic, literary, and visual virtuosity, as well as for themastery with which it allows thought to circulate from one medium to another without ever diminishing the singularity of each.
